GeerGarage provides adventurers with access to a wide range of outdoor gear at a fraction of the cost of buying. Like many rental companies, GeerGarage requires a security deposit to ensure that rented gear is returned to our lenders in good condition. In this article, we will discuss how we handle security deposits and what you need to know before participating in your first rental.

At GeerGarage, deposit fees are calculated at the time of rental booking and will not exceed $200. The exact amount of the deposit will depend on the type of gear rented and its value. Our deposit maxes out at $200 at this time to ensure that the cost of rental is not prohibitively high. Our mission is to make the outdoors more accessible and we don't want a high deposit to prevent someone from renting in the first place.

For rentals that are five days or less, GeerGarage places a hold on the renter's credit card for the amount of the deposit. At the end of the rental period, GeerGarage releases the hold on the credit card, provided that the gear is returned to the lender in the same condition as it started.

For rentals that are longer than five days, GeerGarage charges the security deposit at the time of rental. We refund the renter at the end of the rental period if the gear is returned in the same condition as it started.

If there is a claim on the security deposit, GeerGarage collects the deposit and holds it in escrow until the claim is resolved. In such circumstances, GeerGarage reaches out to both the renter and the lender to gather information and evidence related to the claim. GeerGarage's goal is always to resolve the claim as quickly and fairly as possible. To maintain fairness, we recommend that renters and lenders inspect gear both before and after a rental.
